What is a CNC Machine?

CNC stands for Computer Numerical Control. The CNC part of the machine is the computer "controller" which can interpret G-code and M-code commands which then drives a machine tool. The computer accurately calculates the data it receives and directs the servomechanisms that translate the data into movement. The operating parameters of the CNC can be altered via the Master Control Unit (MCU) of the machine. The introduction of CNC machines radically changed the manufacturing industry. Curves are as easy to cut as straight lines, complex 3-D structures are relatively easy to produce, and the number of machining steps that required human action have been dramatically reduced.
